The home side came out on top in a hugely entertaining Rhein-Main derby, with Johannes Geis, Yunus Malli and Christian Clemens giving Mainz a comfortable win. Frankfurt had went ahead through Stefan Aigner.

Julian Baumgartlinger had the best chance of the opening five minutes forcing Kevin Trapp to save his shot with his feet.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s best chance of the opening half an hour came through Stefan Aigner, he met Bastian Oczipka’s cross but his header flew over the bar. Ten minutes before the break Haris Seferovic played through  Aigner who made no mistake this time and fired home from a tight angle.

Just three minutes later the score was level again. Schalke loanee Christian Clemens, Shinji Okazaki’s brilliantly build up made the goal for Clemens who slotted it past Trapp.

Two minutes into the second half, brilliance from Johannes Geis sent the hosts into the lead. His free kick from the edge of the box was too much for Trapp to keep out and crept in to make it 2-1. Mainz then made it 3-1, Yunus Malli adding to his four goals already in the Bundesliga to give his side a two-goal cushion with a brilliant finish. Great build up from Mainz was rounded up with a quick burst of pace to create some space and Malli found the corner of the net superbly, Trapp could only watch it nestle into the corner.

Thomas Schaaf’s side failed to get back into the game following Malli’s third goal and their woes were made worse with seven minutes remaining as Carlos Zambrano was sent off for a second yellow following a bad challenge.

However, for Mainz, they were in the ascendency. Baumgartlinger and Elkin Soto came close; Baumgartlinger’s shot was brilliantly bloke by Alexander Madlung, then Soto’s strike went sailing over the bar - he couldn’t quite repeat his goal against Dortmund.
