The odds were well against Paderborn going into the encounter, with just one win in the last 13 for the side struggling to cope in their first Bundesliga season. Lucien Favre's 'Gladbach side posed mission impossible, as the home side have been nothing short of superb thus far this season, finding themselves third in the league as a result.

Borussia began the game with the right level of intensity, and were unlucky not to be leading on 12 minutes, when after good work by Xhaka, Traore had a shot tipped behind.

On 18 minutes however they did lead courtesy of Fabian Johnson. His cut inside and shot again took a deflection and evaded Kruse, meaning the Fohlen had an early 1-0 home lead.

The lead was almost doubled in the 25th minute in unfortunate circumstances. A pullback from the right side after the twisting and turning of Traoré was met by Ziegler, who turned the ball onto his own post. Thankfully the ball cannoned away for a corner, avoiding an embarrassing own goal for the Paderborn man.

The story of the first half was mostly the control of the home side, with the visitors not having much position or any real opportunities. It was clear a patient game was being played, trying to stay in the game rather than force the issue.

Six minutes before the break Hrgota produced a good save from Kruse after dropping the shoulder and unleashing a low drive. A combination of good keeping and defensive resilience ensured it was only 1-0 to the home side at the break.

There was an early opportunity just 45 seconds into the first half for the visitors, as a dangerous delivery was met by Kachunga and Lakic at the same time, causing the effort to loop into the arms of Sommer.

Just a minute later Borussia should have certainly doubled their lead, when Johnson whipped in a perfect cross for an unmarked Raffael, but his header was straight at the ‘keeper, providing the visitors with a let off.

Paderborn certainly had a bit more tempo about them in the second half, and Albanian-International Meha forced Sommer to make a fantastic save from a 25-yard drive that was heading right for the top left corner.

In the entire second period ‘Gladbach didn't really look threatened, and it was clear to see why they have conceded 18 goals thus far in the season. They kept the ball well and distributed it into positions that meant the visitors had a lot of running to do.

The tired legs told in the 82nd minute, when Herrmann added a second for the home side. Following a swift move, Hermann unleashed a shot that deflected once again and trickled past the ‘keeper to make sure of the win for Borussia.

It was almost 3-0 in the dying seconds as Herrmann once again produced a marvellous solo effort, ducking and diving through several defenders before his sweet drive hit the left post.

A comfortable three points all told for the home side, and Paderborn are still struggling to pick up points, having won just three matches since Matchday 4. The Fohlen will still be for as good a finish as possible, and hoping to rekindle those glory days once a Champions League position is secured.
