Wolfsburg strolled into the last eight with a calm 2-1 win against Inter Milan at the San Siro, with goals from Caligiuri and Bendtner securing the Wolves' place in the quarter-finals.

Hernanes had a great chance to give the hosts the lead in the 4th minute when the Brazilian midfielder shrugged off his marker on the edge of the penalty box, but his strike was met by a great save from Benaglio, who parried the shot out for a thrown in. Caligiuri tried his effort on goal a minute later for Wolfsburg, but his volley from a Vieirinha cross was just too high, and the ball flew over the bar.

Wolfsburg came close again when Bas Dost was played through on goal buy De Bruyne in the 9th minute, but the inform striker took too long to pull the trigger, and Carrizo managed to put enough pressure on the Dutch striker, to claim the ball. Benaglio was called into action again in the 22nd minute when Icardi found himself one-on-one with the Swiss keeper, however Icardi’s shot was brilliantly saved by Benaglio to keep the game goalless.

However, Wolfsburg managed to break moments later when Gustavo found Kevin De Bruyne, who from the left wing picked out a brilliant pass to Caligiuri inside the penalty box.

Despite the German winger’s shot taking a wicked deflection off Carrizo, the ball bounced into the net, to give Wolfsburg the lead. Vieirinha could had doubled Wolfsburg lead in the 36th minute when the Portuguese winger glided past the Inter defence, but his shot was well saved by Carrizo.

Benaglio came to Wolfsburg rescue again when Guarin had a shot from 6-yards out brilliantly saved by the legs of Benaglio in the 44th minute, to keep the score at 1-0, going into half time.

It took until the 64th minute till a chance occurred when Palacio skilfully dribbled his way past the Wolfsburg defence, but his shot from deep inside the penalty box was just too weak, and Benaglio easily tipped the ball around for a corner.

Palacio gave the hosts a glimmer of hope when the Argentina striker played a brilliant one-two with Hernanes to beat the offside trap, and the 33-year-old striker slotted the ball past Benaglio, to make it 1-1 in the 71st minute.

Former Arsenal striker Nicklas Bendtner ensured Wolfsburg’s progression to the quarter-finals when Perisic whipped in a great cross to the Danish striker, and the 25-year-old attacker volleyed the ball under Carrizo, to make it 2-1 to the Wolves in the 89th minute.
