At the RheinEnergyStadion, in Köln, Germany, Matthias Lehmann earned the hosts a point with a spot kick conversion in the 88th minute of the match, canceling out a Werder Bremen lead that they had managed to hang on to for 61 minutes.

In the second minute of the match, Janek Sternberg had the visitors first chance but his audacious attempt from about 30 yards away sailed over the top of the goal. That was an early warning sign, though, as Bremen would dominate that first half of play. Three minutes later, Flin Bartels had a shot from a very tight angle by Timo Horn rather easily. At the 12 minute mark, Timo Horn came up huge again as the shot stopper saved a Zlatko Junuzovic shot from the middle of the eighteen yard box. Sternberg was involved again ten minutes later. He had a shot from the top right corner of the box saved excellentely by Horn.

Three minutes before the half hour mark, Werder Bremen would strike. Off of a corner, the ball fell to Davie Selke who placed the ball in behind Horn. For Köln, however, Horn had been huge up to that point and if it were not for him, then the hosts could have been down at least two goals by this point. That goal did seem to calm Köln down and they got their first couple of looks at goal in the 29th minute, but both Dominic Maroh and Anthony Ujah missed the target.

The beginning of the second half was a little physical as the ref blew his whistle often in the opening ten minutes. This did not allow either side to get into a rhythm, although it did help Werder Bremen as time was slowly ticking away. It wasn't until the 87th minute of the match when Santiago Garcia fouled Bard Finne inside the area. Lehmann stepped up to the spot and converted an excellent penalty as he sent it into the top left corner.

This draw leaves Werder Bremen sitting in the top half of the table in ninth place one point ahead of Borussia Dortmund, while Köln are in the 11th spot and maintain that -6 goal differential.
