1. FC Union Berlin have made their second free signing in as many days, this time adding Eintracht Braunschweig's Benjamin Kessel to their ranks for next season.

Kessel joins Stephan Fürstner as their latest transfer, who joined on Tuesday from SpVgg Greuther Fürth.

The 27-year-old is a veteran of the second division, having spent a lot of his time at Braunschweig in the 2. Bundesliga. He was part of the team that earned promotion from the 3. Liga, as well as the side which returned the Lions to the Bundesliga after a 28-year wait.

This season, back in the 2. Liga, has seen him feature in all but five of their games. Kessel has also been in a fantastic vein of goalscoring form; notching up five goals and two assists, making him Braunschweig's second top scorer.

"Benjamin Kessel is a tough player who will improve our defense with his height and heading ability," commented Union head coach Norbert Düwel.

"He has proven his qualities in recent years in the top two leagues. I am convinced that he will be an asset to us."

Kessel himself added, "I experienced some wonderful years with Eintracht Braunschweig and together we have achieved an enormous amount. I am very grateful to the club and I will give everything to the last game so we can finish the season as successfully as possible.

"After five years, I was looking for a new challenge and I found that here. I look forward to putting my skills to the test there next season."

His teams, past and present, face off on the final day of the season, although they'll both look to improve on their current league positions when they face off against SV Sandhausen and Fürth respectively.
