Just a matter of hours before VfL Bochum's game with RB Leipzig, news broke that goalkeeper Michael Esser would join SK Sturm Graz at the end of the season.

The 27-year-old has been with the Ruhrstadion side since 2008 but first-team opportunities have been limited until Gertjan Verbeek recently took over. The Dutchman placed his faith in Esser and was suitably rewarded, as the shot-stopper put in a string of fantastic performances and helped the side go on a six-game unbeaten run.

Though the announcement on Sunday morning meant he was immediately replaced by Andreas Luthe. The team went on to lose 1-2, although Luthe was powerless to stop any of RB Leipzig's goals.

Esser has been rewarded with a contract until 2018 and the option for a further year. He'll join up with his new club in July, when his current deal at Bochum expires. "I am delighted, that from next season, I am able to play for such a traditional club like SK Sturm," said Esser.

He continued, "It is a great challenge for me to strengthen this team with European aims." Sturm Graz's Franco Foda also had his say, "I am very glad that another player from the German Bundesliga has chosen Graz. This shows that Sturm is also interesting for players in top leagues."

As for possible replacements, young Daniel Heuer Fernandes has been rumoured to be interesting Bochum. The Portugal under-21 goalkeeper has been one of top players in the 3. Liga for VfL Osnabrück this season. It would also mean a return to the Ruhrstadion, the 22-year-old was with the Ruhr Valley side between 2008-10 and 2011-13.
