After the departure of head coach Tayfun Korkut Hannover needed to bring in a new head coach fast as the end of the season near's. With just five matches remaining Hannover currently sit in fifteenth place and haven't won in 2015 experiencing seven losses and five draws.
Former Bochum head coach Peter Neururer was the front runner for the job and today met in a hotel to discuss term's and it would've been a good appointment with his wealth of experience managing in Germany. Neururer has managed over six-hundred games in football and he's also spent two spells at Hannover, however it wasn't third time lucky for the fifty-nine-year-old.
Hannover decided to go for a different head coach and his name is Michael Frontzeck. The fifty-one-year-old played over five-hundred game's during his career as a left back including playing nineteen times for the national team.
Frontzeck's coaching career started at his home town club Borussia Mönchengladbach, he was assistant manager for two year's before moving on to being an assistant at Hannover. After those two spells as number two he finally took the driver's seat in 2006 when he took over at Alemannia Aachen, his season there wasn't successful as the team were relegated from the Bundesliga, at the end of the season he resigned.
The next step for Frontzeck was taking charge of Arminia Bielefeld, the Bundesliga outfit were struggling and after the winter break in the 2007-08 season Frontzeck replaced Ernst Middendorp. That season Frontzeck managed to guide Bielefeld to safety and finishing three points clear. The following season saw Bielefeld finish bottom of the table and Frontzeck lost his job on the 17th of May.
It didn't take long for Frontzeck to find another job as the start of July saw him take charge of Broussia Mönchengladbach following Hans Meyer's retirement at the end of the season. It was a good first season for Gladbach that season as they managed to finish in twelfth place. In the 2010-11 season he lost his job once again thank's to Gladbach sitting at the bottom of the table in February, his replacement was Lucien Favre.
Frontzeck's latest job was in charge of St. Pauli in the 2012-13 season, he took over in October with the team in thirteenth place and guided them to a tenth place finish. He was sacked the following November with the team in eight place. His work at St. Pauli has been his most successful with a win ratio of thirty-six percent.
Hannover's sporting director Dirk Dufner believes he's the right man for the job, "He knows the Bundesliga and I am convinced the team will finish the season successfully."
Frontzeck has experience in the Bundesliga and indeed with a relegation scrap, however it's been quite a while since he managed in the Bundesliga so they'll be hoping the gamble pays off.
The club are able to have the situation resolved so quickly and Frontzeck will be up early to take his first training session tomorrow as well as the small matter of being presented to the press.
