In what was a pulsating game in Berlin, Marvin Matip's early goal looked to have handed Ingolstadt the three points. However that was not the case, as Björn Jopek notched up a brace from outside the box to put Union ahead. That was not enough for the hosts and Tobias Levels headed home a late equaliser to secure a point.

Union were continuing to build for next season, having made Maxi Thiel their fifth pre-summer signing, though they were also having a very solid campaign in preparation for a possible promotion push the following term. Norbert Düwel's men earned a draw against Greuther Fürth last weekend, falling to a 89th minute Johannes Wurtz equaliser. The capital club made just one change for the visit of the league leaders, as Björn Jopek came in for Martin Kobylanski.

Unlike their opponents, Ingolstadt were the beneficiaries of a last-minute goal. Marvin Matip's 96th minute winner took them a step closer to the promised land, securing them a 3-2 win over Fortuna Düsseldorf. Ralph Hasenhüttl was without the suspended Danilo Soares and Roger, so Konstantin Engel and Thomas Pledl came into the starting line-up.

Despite Union forcing their visitors into several last-ditch clearances, they couldn't defend their own goal with such gusto. Ingolstadt earned a seemingly harmless free-kick, but some woeful marking and quick thinking from Pascal Groß meant that the hosts were made to pay. The Union defence left Matip all on his own, that gave Groß plenty of space to pick him out and the centre-back controlled and finished like a seasoned striker to give his side an early lead.

Ingolstadt were beginning to take control and Lukas Hinterser's spectacular 20-yard volley went mere inches wide of the post. Mathew Leckie came similarly close to adding to his side's lead with a header, though Christopher Quiring couldn't make solid contact on a cross at the other end and wasted a great chance on the break.

Roberto Puncec was next to try his luck, only for his headed effort to fly comfortably wide of Ramazan Özcan's upright. Maxi Thiel's header did find the target, however, but Ingolstadt's stopper dealt with it well. Union had turned the tide once more although they couldn't find an equalise before the break.

There was some concern at the start of the second period for Benjamin Hübner, who was caught late by Jopek. Luckily for the visitors, a few minutes of treatment had him back on the pitch. The visiting defence was under plenty of pressure from the Union attack, although they were very wasteful going forward.

Arne Aarnink's pocket was being dipped into with increasing regularity as the game became more and more physical. Some extremely rash and cynical tackles saw the Nordhorn-born referee hand out a flurry of cards as the half drew on.

Union threw on Eroll Zejnullahu to help solidify their midfield with Ingolstadt looking more dangerous on the break. In all, the second half threw up very few clear cut chances but it was still one in which the home team were controlling territory and possession.

It looked like Ingolstadt would somehow hold on to the win, but Jopek had other ideas. His first goal was a well-worked team goal, finished off with a thumping twenty-yard drive. He collected Damir Kreilach's lay-off and let rip, swerving the ball into the roof of the net. The second strike was equally impressive, curling the ball brilliantly around the wall and leaving Özcan with no chance.

However, that joy was to be short lived as Ingolstadt hit back again. The third goal in seven minutes was headed in off the post by Tobias Levels, who rose highest to meet Groß' delivery and bring the visitors back on level terms.

Neither side could find a winner, in what was a quite amazing encounter. Ingolstadt move five points clear of Kaiserslautern at the top, though that was cut from seven at the beginning of the matchday. Union remain in mid-table and will be pleased with such an impressive performance.
