After Paderborn had taken a 2-0 lead before the half an hour mark, Werder Bremen pegged the back as the match ended 2-2 at the Benteler-Arena.

As the match was starting to take shape, both sides were playing for possession, trying to feel each other out. Werder Bremen got the first half chance of the evening through Zlatko Junuzovic, however, his free kick fell straight into the arms of Kruse. Other than this free kick, there were not a whole lot of attacking moments in the early stages. Finally, in the 20th minute, Elias Kachunga had the best opportunity of either side when his effort just missed to the left hand side of the goal. A minute later, Philipp Bargfrede had a go from sixteen yards away, unfortunately, his effort caused no harm at all.

Then seemingly out of nowhere, Mario Vrancic gave Paderborn the lead in the 26th minute against the run of play as he blasted the ball into the back of the net past a desperate Koen Casteels. Less than a minute later, the hosts would double their lead as they exploited Werder Bremen's shakey defense. Süleyman Koc provided a wonderful ball into the box where Moritz Stoppelkamp was waiting on the edge of the six yard box and headed the ball past Casteels. Werder Bremen managed to pull one back right before halftime off of a set piece opportunity. Junuzovic sent the ball into the eighteen where it was met by Sebastian Prödl, whose header was not great but it was redirected by Davie Selke from about five yards away.

The second half was much more of the same but this time, Werder Bremen were attacking harder than Paderborn knowing that they could still snatch an equalizing goal with the entire 45 minutes to play. It did eventually come, unfortunately, they had to wait until the 76th minute of the match. Moments after coming onto the pitch, Izet Hajrovic scored his clubs second goal of the day. Off of a Paderborn corner, Assani Lukimya pumped the ball downfield where Hajrovic received it. He continued to race against the opposition's defense and slotted the ball beautifully past Kruse.

This result pushes Paderborn one point clear of the bottom of the table, while Werder Bremen remain in the ninth spot as they could still end the season in a Europa League spot.
