After falling behind early in the match, Darmstadt fired in three goals before the halftime whistle blew as the hosts managed to hang on to a 3-2 lead at the Merck-Stadion am Böllenfalltor.

Kerem Demirbay got things started in the 13th minute of the match when he whipped in a goal directly off of a corner kick giving Kaiserslautern the early lead. However, that lead would be short lived as Darmstadt would equalize just seven minutes later. Marcel Heller was brought down inside the area by the visiting goal keeper. Romain Bregerie would step up to the spot and place the ball perfectly into the back of the net. Two minutes later, the hosts would take the lead through Ronny König after the ball fell directly into his path and strucked the ball home excellently.

With five minutes to go until halftime, Behrens would score his clubs third of the evening. Heller finally got rewarded after being prominent all half down the flank as his cross was met by the goal scorer giving his side that two goal lead.

The second half was far different from the first thanks to Kaiserslautern dominating the play. Unfortunately, they only managed to pull back one and it came with just two minutes remaining in the game through Kevin Stöger.
