Wolfsburg and Brazil Midfielder Luiz Gustavo has been ruled out of the Copa America following a Meniscus injury.

The Brazilian will now need knee surgery, the club announced via Twitter.

The last few days have been a rollercoaster for the 27-year old, he played and scored in their first DFB Pokal win, beating Borussia Dortmund 3-1.

Gustavo will miss the Tournament in Chile which will be played between June 11 to July 4. Previously, Gustavo won 32 appearances for his national side.

In recent weeks, Gustavo had problems with knee injuries which saw him miss games against Hamburg and Borussia Dortmund.

Speaking to Kicker, Wolfsburg manager Dieter Hecking told the German Newspaper: “The damage was greater than expected, it's clear that the tournament makes no sense for him.

"We hope he will be back in time for the preparations for the new season."

The Meniscus injury is also known as knee cartilage, which could be either in the lateral or medial part of the knee. Specialists say the injury was caused as a result of trauma or a previous sports injury.

Gustavo featured 31 times last term for the Wolves, he averaged 50% success rate with his duels. As a Defensive Midfielder he won 74% of take on’s last season.

Luiz Gustavo, worth around £19million, can play centre back and left back but is more accustomed to the centre defensive midfield position. He last sustained a knee injury while at Bayern Munich which saw the two-time DFB Pokal winner miss two games for the Bavarians.
