TSG 1899 Hoffenheim have signed Jonathan Schmid from SC Freiburg for €4m, with the Italian midfielder, Vincenzo Grifo, going in the opposite direction.

The Frenchman has played with Freiburg for his whole career, but leaves in need of consistent Bundesliga top-flight football.

He played all but one of Freiburg’s Bundesliga games last season, and impressed throughout in a nightmare season for the team from the Black Forest.

Markus Gisdol’s men finished eighth in the Bundesliga last season, narrowly missing out on the Europa League spots.

Although they look like losing star man Roberto Firmino, if they continue to make solid and bargain signings like Schmid, the elusive Europa League qualification spot could easily be theirs next season.

With fellow Freiburg star performers Admir Mehmedi, Roman Bürki and Felix Klaus all linked with moves away, Schmid's departure could be the one that hurts the most. A great signing for 1899 Hoffenheim nonetheless.
