Hannover 96 and Manuel Schmiedebach have agreed to prematurely extend the midfielder's contract until 2018.

The 26-year-old's deal was originally scheduled to run out next summer, though this new deal is a sign that he will remain a key part of the club's plans.

A statement on the club's website added, "We would like to congratulate Manuel Schmiedebach on the contract extension and we are excited that he is staying true to 96 for some more years."

Schmiedebach arrived from Hertha BSC back in 2008 and has amassed almost 150 Bundesliga games for the Lowe Saxony side.

He had lost his place under Mirko Slomka, though this season Tayfun Korkut and Michael Frontzeck quickly restored him to the starting line-up.

The defensive midfielder made 27 appearances in the 2014/15 season, and was even used as a right-back by the now permanent head coach, Frontzeck. Hannover just managed to preserve their Bundesliga status, thanks to final day win over SC Freiburg.
