FC Bayern have decided that young midfielder Pierre Emile-Højbjerg is to return to the Bundesliga champion’s first team next season, after his spell at fellow Bundesliga side FC Augsburg.

The 19-year old, who was named in Denmark’s squad for the upcoming UEFA U21 Championship, spent the Rückrunde on loan at Bayern’s Bavarian rivals FC Augsburg, making 16 appearances.

Højbjerg, who has also made five caps for the Danish senior team, will be brought back into the first team set-up under Pep Guardiola after gaining important top-flight experience at the SGL Arena, after finding opportunities limited at the Allianz despite being highly rated by the staff at Säbener Straße.

After rumours that the Dane could be sent to rivals Borussia Dortmund in a swap deal to bring German international Ilkay Gündoğan to Munich, the news that he will be part of the first team set-up will bring an end to the speculation.

Højbjerg came back to haunt his parent club last season too, perfectly demonstrating his ability as it was his cross that set up Augsburg striker Raul Bobadilla for the only goal of the game as Augsburg defeated Bayern at the Allianz Arena.

FC Augsburg qualify for the Europa League

The Dane, who joined Bayern from Brondby IF in 2012, helped Markus Weinzierl’s men to a Europa League spot, scoring a crucial goal as Augsburg won 3-1 away on the final day at Borussia Mönchengladbach, as the Bavarians secured a fifth place finish, the highest in the club’s history.
