DSC Arminia Bielefeld have confirmed the signing of Wolfgang Hesl from SpVgg Greuther Fürth on a free transfer.

The 29-year-old goalkeeper has been a fixture in the Shamrocks' side since he joined the club, back in 2012 from Dynamo Dresden.

Hesl, who had a spell at Hamburger SV previously, has almost 100 2. Bundesliga games under his belt and has been rewarded with a two-year deal at his new club.

Arabi, Hesl give their thoughts on the move

"I look forward to the challenge in Bielefeld," said Hesl. He said he was 'excited to do something new'.

All in all, there was only one thing in the stopper's mind: "I want to help ensure that we have a successful season."

Samir Arabi, sporting director with the SchücoArena side, was also pleased to have made the high-profile signing:

"In Wolfgang Hesl we have signed a goalkeeper, who, in recent years, has put on some very good performances in the first and second division."

Arabi also mentioned his role 'as captain in Fürth' and 'the responsibility' that comes with such a task.

The sporting director admitted he was convinced with Hesl's abilities: "He will play an important role with us", before concluding that he was 'pleased that he has opted for a move to Bielefeld'.

Hesl will take up the number one shirt following on from Alexander Schwolow's departure, as he returned early after his loan spell from SC Freiburg.

Who'll replace Hesl at Fürth?

Mark Flekken, Tom Mickel and Miro Varvodic now remain as the first choice goalkeepers at the club.

Mickel was the most regular of the aforementioned custodians, making six appearances while Hesl was absent. Flekken, 21, played in just two matches.

It could be the case that Fürth opt for a new goalkeeper, especially with head coach Mike Büskens' decision to leave.
