Leon Balogun will be departing SV Darmstadt 98 when his contract expires this summer, Dirk Schuster confirmed.

The 26-year-old defender leaves after spending less than a calendar year at Darmstadt, having arrived on a free in October 2014.

Fortuna Düsseldorf, who are believed to be in the running to sign him, were the 2. Bundesliga side to let him go.

It would be an odd move for Balogun, however, especially following his fine performances helped Darmstadt return to the Bundesliga after a lengthy absence.

The Nigerian international played 90 minutes for his country against Chad at the weekend, and could be holding out for a bigger switch to the first division.

Schuster has his say on the departure

"Leon has informed me that he is looking for a new challenge," said Schuster.

The Darmstadt coach confirmed, "He [Leon] has thanked us for the chance that we have offered him."

However, the next part was rather disappointing for the Lilies' support, adding: "He [Leon] has informed us that he will not sign a new contract in Darmstadt."

The news was followed with rumours that Sandro Sirigu would be offered a new deal, and that Ronny König needed to begin the search for a new club.

Balogun follows Behrens and Brégerie out the door

Even with the club securing an historic promotion, players have still decided to move on to pastures new.

Hanno Behrens, a vital cog in their tireless midfield, has joined 1. FC Nürnberg and Romain Brégerie moved to fellow promoted side, FC Ingolstadt 04.

It seems unlikely that any other players will depart, though some serious strengthening will need to be done to try and keep the club in the Bundesliga.

After Dominik Stroh-Engel's goals dried up, they had to rely on their midfield to find the net - so a striker and replacements for the aforementioned trio are key.
