1860 München’s full-back and captain Christopher Schindler has extended his contract with the Löwen for four years until summer 2019.

It was rumoured that some Bundesliga clubs were interested in the 25-year-old - who has played for 1860 since he joined the club in 1999 at the age of nine from district club FC Perlach.

“1860 is my club and it was clear to me that I wanted to stay here for as long as the perspectives are good," Schindler said. Furthermore, he added that: “I believe in our team and I will be a good captain to be as successful as possible.”

From the youth to the first team

Schindler was trained in the youth academy of 1860 and made his first appearance for the second team in 2009, in an away game against SpVgg Weiden.

He made in total 39 appearances for the Bavarian's second team, scoring three goals. His first game for 1860 München’s 2. Bundesliga squad was on 3rd October 2010, when he was substituted for Aleksandar Ignjovski in a clash against 1. FC Union Berlin.

Becoming the captain

Schindler has made 107 appearances for 1860 thus far, scoring three goals. Furthermore, he played four times for the Germany under-21 team in 2011. He became captain of the team after his predecessor, Julian Weigl, only 18 years old at the time, was moved to the second team for disciplinary reasons.

“A good sign”

1860’s sporting director Gerald Poschner said that, “We are very happy that Christopher leads by example and shows his confidence in us for a long time. It is a good sign at a good time.”

With his team, Schindler almost got relegated after a thrilling relegation battle with Holstein Kiel, but the Löwen managed to save themselves with a last-minute goal avoiding the woeful walk to the 3. Liga.
