David Abraham has joined Eintracht Frankfurt, the club have confirmed.

The defender leaves TSG 1899 Hoffenheim for an undisclosed fee, with a year remaining on his contract at the club before Frankfurt swooped in and persuaded him to sign a three-year deal.

Abraham spoke to Kicker about the move, saying that it will be "nice to play for such a large and long-established club," calling it "another challenge" for him "in the Bundesliga." He credited Hoffenheim for helping him "mature further" though, saying that the "highly-professional environment and backing" he received at the club allowed him to "do well" for them.

Hübner happy to have Abraham on board

Frankfurt's sporting direction, Bruno Hübner, expressed his excitement about the transfer too, calling Abraham a player who "fits exactly into the profile" that the club were looking for in central defence, as he is "quick and strong in a tackle."

Abraham started his career with Independiente, a club based in his home country of Argentina. He made his debut for them as a 19-year-old and would go on to play 70 games over the course of two years, scoring two goals.

His performances earned him a call-up to Argentina's under 20 squad, where he would make six appearances in 2005, and also attracted the interest of plenty of teams in Europe, with him joining Spanish second division side Gimnastic in 2007.

However, he would leave the club after just one season, in which he played 36 games and scored three goals, as they failed to win promotion to La Liga.

His next adventure came in Switzerland, Abraham joining Swiss champions FC Basel in 2008 and going on to make over 100 appearances over four years. He won the Swiss Super League in three of his four seasons, and the Swiss Cup twice, before returning to Spain with Getafe

A new start in Frankfurt?

He struggled to establish himself in the side though and left after one season, during which he played only nine games. The defender joined Hoffenheim from the Spanish club, and scored two goals in 42 games over the last couple of seasons for them.

Abraham's arrival is the second this week in Frankfurt, with FC Twente striker Luc Castaignos having joined just a few days ago.
