Arminia Bielefeld's squad strengthening has taken another leap forward, as the club announced the signing of Brian Behrendt from Rapid Wien.

The 23-year-old is equally comfortable at centre-back and in defensive midfield, and has signed a three-year contract and will wear the number three. Both teams decided to remain quiet in regards to the transfer fee.

From Germany to Wien and back again

Behrendt started off with Hamburger SV's youth teams, before making the switch to Wien in 2009. The then 17-year-old slowly began to work his way through the ranks and, with help from a loan to SV Horn, make 54 appearances for the senior squad.

After playing nearly every league game in 2013/14, a metatarsal fracture this season meant he missed over half the season. This could have led to a cut-price deal for Bielefeld - which isn't a bad thing, considering his obvious potential.

Arabi and Behrendt delighted with the deal

Samir Arabi, sporting director with Bielefeld, said: "We have watched Brian Behrendt over a long period of time and are pleased that we were able to finalise the transfer. He is very strong in the air and the tackle, and can be used in lots of different positions in defence."

Behrendt also had his say on the move: "I am very pleased to be in Bielefeld. Here, I am at a totally traditional club with a great team and great fans. Now I am looking forward to the challenges ahead."

One of many new recruits for Norbert Meier's men

The German utility man is one of several new signings into the SchücoArena, which include several experienced 2. Bundesliga players. Michael Görlitz, Daniel DavariBjörn JopekChristopher Nöthe, Dennis Mast and Wolfgang Hesl have all arrived, as they look to settle in the second division.
