FC Augsburg have announced that goalkeeper Marwin Hitz has extended his contract with the club until 2018.

Hitz enjoyed a marvelous season with Augsburg last term, as he helped them to qualify for the Europa League - the first time in history they achieved such a feat. He did more than just make a string of saves, however, as the Swiss stopper scored a dramatic late equaliser to seal a point against Bayer Leverkusen.

A chance was all Hitz needed

Hitz joined the SGL Arena side back in 2013 after spending five years with fellow Bundesliga side, VfL Wolfsburg. During his time in Lower Saxony, he made just 13 appearances in Germany's top division.

A move to Augsburg initially began badly, as a few shaky performances made the home faithful doubt that he was a better choice than Alexander Manniger. That all changed in 2014/15, were he impressed massively in die Fuggerstädter's meteoric rise.

Had it not been for an injury during the second half of the season, Hitz would probably have been an ever-present. He'll continue to be part of an Augsburg team that have managed to hold on to their key players, which surely bodes well for next term.

Hitz and Reuter have their say

"For me it has been two very eventful years in Augsburg, both sporting and privately, which were incredibly good fun," said Hitz. He admitted he was "delighted" to be taking on the "new challenges" in the coming years with the club.

Sporting director Stefan Reuter was equally happy with Hitz's decision, explaining that they were also ecstatic and the player himself has undertaken a "great development in the last two years".

Reuter seen it important to keep a "top performer" at the team for the  "long-term". He also added that the 27-year-old can "fully focus" pre-season ahead of their training camp to come.
