In a topsy-turvy game, Hamburger SV lost out to fourth-tier side Carl Zeiss Jena thanks to Johannes Pieles late headed goal in extra-time - ending their DFB-Pokal dream at the first hurdle.

The Regionalliga Nordost side had began their campaign well, picking up four points from a possible six. Jena made just one change to the side that drew 0-0 with Schönberg, bringing in Marcel Bär for Dominik Bock. For HSV this was their first competitive outing of the season and they fielded three new signings, handing Albin Ekdal, Gotoku Sakai and Emir Spahic their debuts.

There was no obvious gap in quality between the teams and, in fact, the hosts were looking far more likely to score. Velimir Jovanovic was proving to be a thorn in the side of Hamburg and he was running the channels extremely well. Manfred Starke also had a sight at goal but his header didn't trouble René Adler.

Early lead for the hosts

Jena were to be rewarded for their fantastic start and took the lead in spectacular fashion. Justin Gerlach sauntered up to a 30 yard free-kick and rifled a daisy-cutter in off the post to send the packed home support delirious. It wasn't a particularly powerful or swerving effort, although it had caught Adler out after coming through a packed box and clipped the woodwork before nestling in the back of the net.

The home side continued to look solid defensively but were almost caught out when Raphael Koczor's mistimed punch landed on the head of Emir Spahic. The Bosnian looped a header over the stranded 'keeper, only for Starke to make a crucial intervention on the line. Both teams were slowly descending into a midfield battle, and neither could create another meaningful chance before the break.

Controversial equaliser

Hamburg came out in the second half and immediately looked more dangerous, equalising within five minutes of the restart. However, it was a hugely controversial goal.

Ivo Ilicevic had gone past his man but the ball dribbled out of play, he still managed to get in a cross but the home defence had already stopped to appeal for the goal-kick. Ivica Olic tapped past Koczor though the goal stood, prompting a furious reaction from the goalkeeper. His anger was justified, as replays showed the ball had clearly crossed the by-line - not that Hamburg were bothered.

Jovanovic puts Jena back in front, but have heart broken late on

The goal could easily have damped the spirits and morale of the home team, they quickly turned the game on its head once more. Maximilian Schlegl broke away down the right and showed Sakai a clean pair of heels before sliding the ball across to Jovanovic. He made no mistake in finding the back of the net, diving in to restore the lead once again.

A struggle for supremacy emerged, with neither side able to get the upper hand. Sven Schipplock was thrown on for Ekdal, while Michael Gregoritsch also came in the game to try and turn the tide but HSV were rarely able to get in behind the Jena defence let alone get a shot on target.

In what was a crazy passage of play, Schipplock nearly dug his side out of a hole with a late chance but Koczor flicked his shot onto the bar to maintain the lead. That was not the end of the affair and Koczor made one more fantastic save to take the game to extra time, though it was not enough. The resulting corner found its way to Gregoritsch, who turned and volleyed home to earn 30 extra minutes.

Pieles becomes Jena's hero

The first half of extra-time provided little clue to who would come out on top, with neither side able to produce a chance of note. The second half was instantly more lively, in fact Jena regained the lead within a minute of the restart. A hopeful long throw was met by substitute Johannes Pieles, who rose above the rest and found the far corner with a magnificent flicked header.

That was how the game finished, as the hosts began their celebrations that will surely last long into the night.
