It took until the second half but RB Leipzig eventually got the better of Eintracht Braunschweig, winning two-nil after a late surge.

Braunschweig finally got their season started with a 1-0 win over Hallescher FC in the DFB-Pokal, much to the relief of Torsten Lieberknecht. He did decide to make a few changes, however. Saulo Decarli, Salim Khelifi and Mads Hvilsom dropped out, with Joseph Baffo, Hendrick Zuck and Emil Berggreen returning to the line-up.

For the visitors, they were handed a second round berth in the cup after their tie with VfL Osnabrück was abandoned. Ralf Rangnick made two alterations from the intense affair, replacing Stefan Hierlander and Antic Nukan with Georg Teigl and Tim Sebastian.

The visitors were stronger in the opening stages and three good chances fell the way of Massimo Bruno. The Belgian almost capitalised on Marcel Correia's misjudged header, though Ken Reichel and Rafal Gikiewicz were on hand to bail their captain out. Davie Selke also tried his luck early on, only to see the Polish stopper produce a fine save to deny him.

Entertaining first-half sees both sides pass up chances

Braunschweig responded immediately and Jan Hochscheidt rattled the post with a rasping drive from 20 yards out. They continued to have the better of the play but Willi Orban made a crucial interception to halt Hendrick Zuck's charge. Baffo made a vital block to prevent Selke from scoring, though Fabio Coltorti made a similarly important save from Phil Ofosu-Ayeh's effort.

Both sides continued to push forward in search of the opener although the game had finally settled after half an hour of entertainment. Hochscheidt's busy nature continued to shine through as he plugged away down the left, only to be thwarted by multiple blocks. Leipzig tried to push on themselves and the lead themselves but were faced with a staunch Braunschweig back-line and had to settle for a goalless first half.

The second period began with a run of bookings and poor tackles, from which Adam Matuschyk and Stefan Ilsanker were booked. The teams had really tightened up and that had really knocked the entertainment value on the head. Nik Omladic was brought on from the bench to try and spark the game into life, though it was Bruno who had the best chance in the early second half exchanges. His shot coming back off the post from Selke's flick-on.

Leipzig finally break the deadlock

Their record signing was to turn from provider to goal scorer in a matter of moments, however, as he connected well with Dominik Kaiser's set piece to give them the lead. He ghosted in at the back post unmarked, before powering home a header to the opposite side of the net. Braunschweig's resistance was broken, and Leipzig were not going to pass up the opportunity to take full advantage.

Emil Forsberg was the man to profit from Bruno's slick pass as he went round three defenders and rifled a shot in at the near post. Gikiewicz was helpless in goal, with the ball firing past him before he could react. A late fight-back ensue but Coltorti's wise head guided the visitors through the rough past and to their second win of the 2. Bundesliga campaign. The home side's woes continue, however, with just one point from their first three games.
