Thomas Müller’s brace was enough for Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich to climb back above VfL Wolfsburg, in what was an impeccable victory.

Xabi Alonso started the move off with a long diagonal ball to find Douglas Costa, who continued his impressive start to life in the Germany with his fourth assist of the season, finding Müller inside the area to score his 75th Bundesliga goal in 200 appearances.

25-year-old Müller doubled Bayern’s lead from the spot after 60 minutes, giving Bernd Leno the eyes before slotting the ball in the opposite direction, scoring his fifth Bundesliga goal of the season.

Robert Hilbert was at fault yet again for the third, handling the ball inside the area which led to Arjen Robben netting his first league goal of the season 20 minutes from time, ending Leverkusen’s 100 percent record.

Bayern Munich needed three points

Guardiola went into the game against Bayer Leverkusen knowing his side needed three points if they were to climb back above Wolfsburg, following their 3-0 victory over Schalke 04. The Spaniard, who started his third season in charge of the Bavarian side was forced to replace Mehdi Benatia and Jerome Boateng with Thiago and Juan Bernat, due to a suspension and injury, meaning Bayern weren’t starting with an accomplished centre-back. Mario Götze also dropped to the bench in place of Robert Lewandowski, who scored in their late win over TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.

Leverkusen and Roger Schmidt headed into their game against Bayern in good form, following an emphatic win in their Champions League qualifier against Lazio. Schmidt opted for an unchanged lineup to the side that won 3-0, which included the likes of Christoph Kramer, Hakan Calhanoglu and Stefan Kießling.

Early pressure from Leverkusen

The opening 10 minutes was a closely contested affair, with Karim Bellarabi, Admir Mehmedi and Kießling not giving the Bayern back three a moment on the ball, resulting in an early yellow card for Bernat after the Spaniard attempted to make amends after losing possession.

The first opportunity came from a Bayern attack which involved Müller and Robben. The former’s quick thinking free-kick found Robben on the right-flank, who opted to take on Wendell. The Dutchman’s cross found Thiago on the edge of the area, whose first time shot sailed just over the crossbar.

Kramer was the next player in Florian Meyer’s notebook as the World Cup winner brought down Costa, who looked ever impressive in his debut Bundesliga season. Bayern versus Leverkusen had always been a heated affair and just two minutes later, Thiago was the next to receive a yellow card, and the fourth player in the opening 20 minutes as the youngster cynically brought down Kramer.

Alonso, Costa and Müller combine for Bayern's first

It was Costa who was key in Bayern’s opener midway through the first half. The Brazilian found himself on the end of a Alonso diagonal ball – holding off Robert Hilbert. The summer signing from Shakhtar Donetsk found Müller in the six-yard area, making no mistake in finding the net.

Costa was at the heart of Bayern attack again finding himself unmarked at the far post, which almost led to Bayern’s second of the evening as the reigning champions looked to capitalise on Hilbert’s defensive mistakes.

Calhanoglu however had the last chance of the first-half with one of his trademark free-kicks. The Turkish international stood over the ball from 35-yards, striking the ball with precision, which rattled Manuel Neuer's crossbar.

Despite all the possession, Guardiola looked to be disappointed his side could only take a one-goal lead into the break, although a deserving one.

Within a minute of the restart, Bayern had the ball in Leverkusen’s penalty area, with a strong appeal for a penalty waved away. Meyer deemed that Robben went to ground too easily when a square pass to Lewandowski would have been the better option.

Kießling forced Neuer into making a fine save moments later, before the rebound fell to the German who looped his header over Germany’s number one goalkeeper, only for Alaba to clear Bayern’s lines.

Leverkusen went pressing for the equaliser in the opening stages of the restart as Bellarabi, who switched to the left, cut inside on his favoured right forcing Neuer into another save.

A night to forget for Robert Hilbert

Alonso’s floated free-kick was almost met by the head of Arturo Vidal, but it was Hilbert again who was at fault for Bayern’s second goal, as the right-back shoved the Chilean international who went over in the area. Müller made no mistake in calmly slotting the ball past Leno in the Leverkusen goal as the hosts looked to put the game to bed.

Robben did that just minutes later as Hilbert’s evening went from bad to worse. The Leverkusen defender conceded yet another penalty, which the Dutchman put away after persuading Müller to take the spot kick.

Mario Götze almost scored with his first touch, and it would have been Müller who turned provider for his teammate, whose effort travelled just wide - to Leno's relief.

Bayern’s 3-0 victory against Leverkusen sees the Bavarian side regain top spot in the Bundesliga, and with FC Augsburg travelling to the Allianz Arena on week four, Guardiola’s unbeaten record could yet go on. Meanwhile, Leverkusen welcome newly promoted SV Darmstadt 98 to the BayArena.
