Marc Hornschuh has made the move from FSV Frankfurt to FC St. Pauli, both clubs confirmed on Monday. The defender has signed a one-year deal and has the option to extend that for a further season.

Experience and talent at a young age

The 24-year-old had joined Frankfurt just this summer, though they have already moved him on to St. Pauli. Originally at Borussia Dortmund, Hornschuh was a stalwart in their youth and 3. Liga sides. He made 140 appearances for BVB II, and his games with the under-17s and under-19s comfortably takes him over 200 appearances at the Westphalian club.

Hornschuh, who was a regular Germany's youth set-up at every age group, adds some much needed depth to the centre-back position. Until yesterday, only Lasse Sobiech, captain Sören Gonther and Philipp Ziereis were in the squad at the start of the season, and Gonther is currently injured. Therefore, the additions of Hornschuh and Davidson Drobo-Ampem will let Ewald Lienen sleep slightly easier at the end of Deadline Day.

Meggle, Hornschuh and Lienen give their opinion on the deal

Speaking on the move, Hornschuh said: "I am extremely pleased that St. Pauli have given me the chance to test myself in the 2. Bundesliga." He also added that he is "highly motivated" and "very excited" about the move.

Lienen also gave his thoughts on the deal, "Marc is a versatile defensive player who can play in central defence, in defensive midfield or on the right touchline." The head coach also called Hornschuh "well educated, resilient and strong in the air" and believes that he will continue to help them.

"It was our goal, to sign another central defender," said sporting director, Thomas Meggle. "We succeeded with the transfer of Marc. He is a talented player who gets an opportunity for us to continue to develop at the 2. Bundesliga level."
