Fromer Werder Bremen and ex-Wolfsburg player Aaron Hunt joined Hamburger SV on very last day of the summer transfer window. The midfielder signed a three-year contract until 2018 and the Hamburg side have to pay around €3m to VfL Wolfsburg.

A new start for game hungry Hunt

This transfer might has a stale aftertaste, because the 28-year-old midfielder played for the archrivals of Hamburg, Werder Bremen, for a very long time. Aaron Hunt was vice-captain during his ten year stay at the Weser and his departure from the Weserstadion was a tough one to take for the fans.

After 284 matches for Werder Bremen, Aaron Hunt moved to Wolfsburg on a free transfer last summer. Only one season later, HSV have paid around €3m for the player. They hope that he will add that little bit more creativity in their midfield and "expect that Hunt will help HSV right away", head coach Bruno Labbadia said on the new signing.

Last season, Hunt made only 15 appearances for the Wolves and scored twice for them, in the Europa League he also scored twice in five matches. In the two DFB-Pokal matches where he played, he failed to find the back of the net. A reason for his lack of time on the pitch in a green and white shirt was a medial collateral ligament tear, and Hunt was out for almost two-and-a-half months then.

In Bruno Labbadia's 4-3-3, Hunt will have to fight against his rivals' fan-favourite Lewis Holtby, relegation battle hero Marcelo Diaz, new summer signing Albin Ekdal, youth player Gideon Jung and last season's saviour Gojko Kacar.

Currently, Lewis Holtby, Albin Ekdal and Gideon Jung are starting, but it may be the case that Labbadia will take Holtby out of the squad and new signing Hunt will replace him. That could even happen as soon as the game against Borussia Mönchengladbach.
