Reigning champions Bayern Munich reclaimed top spot after week three in the Frauen-Bundesliga, whilst 1. FC Köln stayed at the foot of the table after conceding six goals for the second time this season.

The third matchday saw the return of the many goals we saw in week one, with 21 scored in six games - one of them a nine-goal thriller. However, two of the three games that produced just the one were the most highly anticipated, as the top four from last season all locked horns in an exciting round of matches.

Three of the five winless sides also got results this time out, with just Köln and Bayer Leverkusen yet to taste victory now.

German and European champions are victorious in the top four clashes

The two big reasons to get excited about German women's football this weekend were because Bayern welcomed VfL Wolfsburg, whilst 1. FFC Turbine Potsdam visited 1. FFC Frankfurt.

The home sides came out on top in both encounters, the former on Friday night as Caroline Abbé's header allowed Bayern to take top spot off of the Wolves - her strike being the first that the DFB-Pokal holders have conceded this season.

On Sunday afternoon, Frankfurt then condemned Potsdam to their second defeat of the season already, last season's cup finalists having lost their opening fixture against Bayern too. Kerstin Garefrekes' goal proved to be the difference in a tight game, the veteran striker finding the back of the net just before the hour.

After a summer of signings, many expected last year's fourth-placed side, Potsdam, to narrow the gap between them and the top three this campaign, but with them having lost to two of them already this season now, this looks unlikely.

Frankfurt now sit second in the table, with them and Bayern the only two teams with a 100 per cent record remaining after three games.

Three sides register first wins

Whilst those at the top came into this game week looking to continue their winning streaks, five teams were looking to begin one, without a victory to their name after the first two games.

SC Freiburg, USV Jena and TSG 1899 Hoffenheim all managed to do exactly this, coming out on top in their respective fixtures in week three.

Freiburg were the most impressive of the trio, thrashing newly-promoted Köln 6-1 thanks to a stunning second half performance. Hasret Kayicki's penalty broke the deadlock three minutes before the break, and this really spurred the hosts on after half time, with Sandra Starke doubling this lead just after the hour. Two minutes later, Wolfsburg loanee Lina Magull made it three as Freiburg established a comfortable advantage.

Lise Overgaard-Munk narrowed the deficit for Köln to give them a glimmer of hope with 18 minutes remaining, but her own goal then re-established the three goal lead for the home side, before Magull and Sarah Puntigam rounded things off by adding fifth and sixth goals for Freiburg in the closing minutes.

Elsewhere on Sunday, Hoffenheim beat SC Sand 2-0. They performed well against Frankfurt last Saturday, but didn't get anything for their efforts, losing 1-0. However, they were able to take positives from the game and showed these again at the weekend, with goals from Nicole Billa and Silvana Chojnowski either side of half time giving Hoffenheim a rather straight-forward victory.

Jena, on the other hand, recorded their first three points of the season on Saturday, albeit in much more dramatic fashion as New Zealand international striker Amber Hearn bagged a 90th minute winner in their home match against Werder Bremen.

Impressive Essen come out on top in nine-goal thriller

Nonetheless, the game of the weekend, without a doubt, came on Sunday afternoon when SGS Essen travelled to Leverkusen - the hosts still winless and looking to rectify that.

Essen, however, came into the game off the back of a narrow 1-0 win over Sand, whilst Leverkusen produced a goalless draw against Jena last time out.

The away side showed their confidence from the off too, finding the back of the net within three minutes through Margarita Gidion. Still, Leverkusen showed immaculate fighting spirit to go in at the break with the lead, goals from Lisa Schwab, Rebecca Knaak and Turid Knaak putting them 3-1 up after 33 minutes, though Gidion did manage to narrow this to 3-2 before the interval.

It looked like Leverkusen were to go on and record their first win of the season when Schwab bagged her brace shortly after the restart, but Essen showed similar fighting spirit to get back on level terms - goals from Jaqueline Klasen and Lea Schüller perfectly setting the match up for a grand finale as it stood at 4-4 with 20 minutes to play.

It was Essen who took the three points in the end, Charline Hartmann giving the game a dramatic conclusion with her 90th minute winner that sends her side up into fourth in the table.

Leverkusen, on the other hand, sit second from bottom with one point from their opening three games. Only Köln's so far pointless start keeps Bayer off the foot of the table.
