TSG 1899 Hoffenheim gained a point at home against Borussia Dortmund as Thomas Tuchel's men could not score more than the one goal, despite multiple opportunities.

Good start for both teams

Hoffenheim had the first chance of the game when Jeremy Toljan entered the box in the fifth minute, but his shot was blocked by Matthias Ginter. The following corner was not dangerous for the BVB defence, as Roman Bürki claimed the high ball.

The next big chance was created by Thomas Tuchel's men. Marcel Schmelzer had some free space on the left wing and played a good cross into the box where Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang could not quite reach the ball to force a shot on Oliver Baumann's goal.

Bürki involuntary shocked the Dortmund supporters shortly after this big chance when he dropped a ball everyone thought he had controlled. Eduardo Vargas was too surprised to react quickly enough and a BVB defender cleared at the expense of a corner kick for 1899.

After more or less half an hour, Aubameyang had the best chance for the Dortmunder thus far, as his decent header - after a long ball by Schmelzer - went just over the crossbar. Baumann would have been without a chance to react.

Dortmund dominated the play as Hoffenheim tried to let the Schwarzgelben have as little space as possible in the midfield to avoid the dangerious and infamous passing. But Gisdol's men became stronger after about 30 minutes, even though they failed to create clear opportunities.

Rudy makes it 1-0

In the 43rd minute, Sebastian Rudy scored the opener for Hoffenheim as he finished off a good pass from outside the box right in front of Bürki.

The lead for Hoffenheim at half-time was quite deserved, as Markus Gisdol's team had gotten better as the game went on. Even though Dortmund had more possesion and more chances, the hosts were able to stop the danger.

After a big chance for Eduardo Vargas, when he could only hit the post in the 51st minute, Hoffenheim's coach Markus Gisdol was sent off for arguing heavily with the referee's assistant.

Shortly after that, Mats Hummels played a ball from the midfield into the box. Gonzalo Castro passed it with his chest to Aubameyang, who finished from close range against a helpless Oliver Baumann to make it 1-1.

Big chances in the final minutes

The next big chances were Dortmund's with Shinji Kagawa missing the goal in the 67th minute, and Gonzalo Castro failing to get the ball past Baumann after he shot from just inside the box in the 71st minute.

Dortmund kept attacking, but Niklas Süle especially played a formidable game in the defence, stopping almost every BVB attack. Because of that and a lot of misfortune in the last minutes, Thomas Tuchel finally failed to win his first official game as Dortmund coach.
