1. FSV Mainz 05 0-3 Bayern Munich: Lewandowski brace continues perfection

1. FSV Mainz 05 and FC Bayern Munich met at the Coface Arena on Saturday afternoon, with the home team looking to play the role of party spoilers and halt a rampant Bayern side.

Build-up

Robert Lewandowski started for the visitors, having scored five goals in nine minutes in midweek against Wolfsburg. The Mainz central duo of Niko Bungert and Stefan Bell would have to be on top form to stop the Pole adding to his tally.

Mainz were sitting comfortably in midtable themselves with nine points accrued from six matches, while Bayern were looking to make it seven wins from seven and add to the ridiculous +17 goal difference.

Opening stages

The early exchanges between the two sides were scrappy, with Bayern struggling to make a significant breakthrough inside ten minutes. Alaba tried a set piece routine that simply lobbed up to Karius in the Mainz goal, while Müller and Costa were being kept quiet.

Bayern as expected had nearly 80% possession inside the opening stages, but Brosinki and Bengtsson as well as Latza and Baumgartlinger were doing a good job containing the explosive FCB.

Despite the resistance, Die Roten of München were awarded a penalty in the 20th minute as De Blasis brought down Kingsley Coman inside the area. No arguments with the decision, and Thomas Müller would surely step up to make it 1-0.

Bayern pass up glorious opening

However, Müller got his footing all wrong, sending the penalty sailing over the bar much to the relief of the Mainz faithful. It was a huge let off for the 05ers, who would have to be more careful for the remainder of the game.

Alaba sent a free kick from around 30 yards out straight at Karius as Die Swaben continue to probe for an opening.

Xabi Alonso then picked up the first caution of the game in minute 27 for a rough challenge on De Blasis.

Mainz had a huge chance to take the lead in the 28th minute through Muto, who found space in the area but pulled his shot wide of the left past with Neuer seemingly beaten. Wasteful from the Japanese striker, who knew full well that his side would have to take chances like that to get a result.

Mainz more than hold their own at half-time

Douglas Costa broke through the defence with 33 minutes on the clock, yet Karius was equal to his effort from the edge of the box, pulling out an amazing save to prevent Bayern scoring the first of the afternoon.

Lewandowski, who had been quiet to the point, had his first half chance in the 40th minute as he shot wide from 20 yards when he would be expected to do better.

At half time it was still locked at 0-0, but it was obvious that Schmidt would be the happier of the two heading into the dressing room.

Guardiola's side had looked a little sluggish, although Bayern would feel a lead was deserved had the penalty been tucked away.

Muto had the best chance from open play though, meaning it was all to play for in the second half.

Lewandowski strikes again

Just minutes into the second half the visitors got the breakthrough. It was the 51st minute, and you don't need to guess who it was.

A wonderful cross from Kingsley Coman on the right was met by a powerful header from who else but Robert Lewandowski, mirroring the minute he opened his five-goal spell against Wolfsburg.

The goal marked Lewandowski's 100th in the Bundesliga, ninth of the season, and sixth in four days.

Thomas Müller made way for Arturo Vidal just before the hour mark as Guardiola looked to consolidate the midfield with the lead achieved.

The Pole grabs his second

Robert Lewandowski wasn't finished with just one though, as he doubled his side's lead in the 63rd minute with a cool finish.

Arturo Vidal put the Pole through on goal, and he made no mistake, rounding the 'keeper Karius and slotting into an empty net to make it 2-0 Bayern.

The start to the second half had been cruel on an otherwise resolute Mainz side, but the painful lessons of concentration lapses were being well and truly learned.

Coman continues good form

It was becoming a rout as Kingsley Coman made it 3-0 just six minutes later.

Costa got space to fire a cross from the byline, and Coman was unmarked to add a third for Bayern and rule the game well and truly over.

Muto should have reduced the deficit in the 71st minute when he found space unmarked at the back post, but he somehow planted a header wide as it was clearly just not Mainz's day.

Clemens rattled the woodwork with 15 minutes remaining, that being the seventh time this campaign that the 05ers have struck metal, with Neuer well beaten.

The tempo dropped considerably in the closing stages as Bayern took the sting out of the game and controlled possession.

With a few minutes left the visitors should have added a fourth, but instead of pulling the trigger for a hat-trick, Lewandowski passed to Götze, who returned the favour too late as the ball was cleared.
