Despite falling behind to PAOK and Robbie Mak's opening goal, Borussia Dortmund secured a point and their third draw in a row thanks to Gonzalo Castro's strike.

The Greeks fielded a largely similar team to that which was victorious last time out, bringing in Dimitar Berbatov and Erik Sabo for Stefanos Athanasiadis and Dimitris Pelkas.

Thomas Tuchel made seven changes to the side that drew with Darmstadt at the weekend, with Roman Weidenfeller, Lukas Piszczek, Neven Subotic, Sven Bender, Joo-Ho Park, Gonzalo Castro, Jonas Hofmann and Adnan Januzaj earning starting berths.

Dortmund dominate but are behind before the break

Dortmund had the first chance of the game and Hofmann almost opened the scoring in spectacular fashion. A poor cross was inadvertently flicked backwards by Marco Reus, as his fellow winger sent a rasping volley just over the bar. The latter looked to have sparked Dortmund into action and Gonzalo Castro's clever run and pass put him through on goal, only to see the offside flag deny him the opportunity to shoot.

The visitors could could themselves unfortunate once again, with the dominant streak beginning to take its toll on PAOK. Sven Bender was next to try his luck after some poor marking left him to get a run on goal. He couldn't take advantage, however, as his effort flashed past the post. Castro came closer still to netting an opener but was denied by Robin Olsen's smart save with his legs.

The Greeks' attacking threat was none existent in the opening half hour and that only opened them up to further Dortmund pressure. However, that all changed soon after. Their first opportunity provided the goal they craved, with a hopeful long ball over the top of the BVB defence from Sabo set Robbie Mak through on goal. He steadied himself an thundered an effort in off the bar, before going to celebrate with the jubilant fans.

A late chance for Julian Weigl came and went, as the visitors found themselves behind at the break. They had no-one to blame but themselves for not finding a goal of their own with profligacy in front of goal coming back to haunt them once again.

BVB battle back for a draw

The second half began much more slowly than the first, with both sides eyeing up the other before attempting to go forward. Set-piece chances came and went for PAOK and BVB, though the former forced Neven Subotic into an impressive block after Mak shot towards goal.

Tuchel took off Weigl and Henrikh Mkhitaryan for Adrian Ramos and Marcel Schemlzer in a bid to push forward more in search of an equaliser. That justified their increased attempts to cross the ball, although he was dealt with well by Ricardo Costa. The Portuguese then gave away a free-kick on the edge of the area, as Reus was denied by Olsen.

It was beginning to look like a lost cause for the Westfalen side, but a stroke of genuis brought them level. Gonzalo Castro's cross was aimed towards the back post and Jonas Hofmann. He made the run towards the ball but opted not to flick towards goal, which left the Swedish stopper stranded and unable to prevent Castro's cross-cum-shot from slipping into the net.

All Dortmund's hard work was close to going without reward late on with Weidenfeller making two crucial saves. First he denied substitute Jairo da Silva on the angle, before producing a magnificent stop from a cross that missed everyone. The veteran custodian was able to react well and palm the ball to safety.

The final opportunities came late and for BVB. A Schmelzer cross, which deflected towards Olsen's goal off his own man, was incredibly and acrobatically kept out by the Swede. Park also came close with a powerful drive that zipped just past the post from the edge of the box. In the end, Dortmund can feel hard done by to not win the game but PAOK's efforts were worthy of a share of the spoils.
