SC Paderborn 07 have moved quickly to replace former coach Markus Gellhaus, by appointing Stefan Effenberg as their new manager.

Gellhaus was sacked earlier this month by the North Rhine-Westphalia club and the club have taken just a week to name their replacement. Former manager Gellhaus was sacked after the relegated club accumulated only seven points from their opening 10 matches, winning just twice. Gellhaus' time with the club was only short. He lasted just shy of four months, after signing a two-year-deal in mid June.

Gellhaus' successor

Stefan Effenberg is a household name in Germany. The 47 year-old former Bundesliga champion made well over 400 career appearances for a host of clubs, most notably Bayern München and Borussia Mönchengladbach, both on two separate occasions.

This will be Effenberg's first managerial venture, and he has signed a deal through until June 2017.

Effenberg will bring a new assistant coach to assist him in his duties with Paderborn. 29-year-old Sören Osterland, the current manager the U19 national of Hungary is the man Effenberg has chosen to have as his number two.

Finke, Bonn and Effenberg have their say

"The chemistry fits! Stefan Effenberg is a football expert. He will be breathe a new self-confidence and inspire the fans," commented club president Wilfried Finke.

The Ccub's CEO of Sport, Michael Born, said: "In the first conversation, Stefan Effenberg convinced me that he is the right candidate for our position of head coach. This impression was further affirmed in the second conversation with our president."

At the same time Born extended his thanks to interim coach René Müller for his commitment: "René has helped us for the second time in a difficult situation and the team trained very well. He will now return to his position as head of youth development again."

Effenberg himself also commented on his appointment as head coach, "For some time I have seriously considered working as a head coach. For entry into this profession, Paderborn is a good place to start." He added,  "You can see this from the impressive careers of my predecessors. The SCP has a lot of quality in the squad and we must now quickly form a successful team".
