After a dull first half, an exciting second period followed and saw Mexico just edge out Germany in the race from Group C's top spot.

Both sides made changes from their previous outing, with Germany making three changes from their win over Argentina. Enes Aykol, Jonas Busam and Görkem Saglam came in for Erdinc Karakas, Daniel Nesseler and Vitaly Janelt. Mexico opted for just one alteration, which saw Jose Gurrola drop out for Claudio Zamudio.

Dull opening half

Unlike the opening two German games, they were not able to take an early lead. The changes hadn't really knocked them off their rhythm, as they continued to dominate possession, but it was clear to see that this was their first real test of the competition.

The main chances for Germany looked to be in wide areas, especially from set-pieces. Mats Köhlert was tasked with delivering the free-kicks, although the majority were wayward and couldn't quite find the heads of the defenders, who had made the journey up from the back.

The first and only opportunity of note in the first-half fell to Johannes Eggestein. The Werder Bremen striker rose highest to meet Felix Passlack's cross, only to get too much on it and send it flying over the bar. That was also the final action of the half, and a pretty forgettable one at that.

Second period provides entertainment

Germany began the second half well and should have taken the lead just moments after the break. A few crosses were cleared by the Mexico defence but eventually it dropped for Busam, who whipped in a wonderful ball to the back post. Abraham Romero missed the ball, but Köhlert couldn't convert at the back post with a free header.

Just as the Germans looked to be building up a head of steam, Mexico came back to punish them for missing that chance. After Eduardo Aguirre had gone close twice in quick succession, Pablo Lopez drove towards goal before unleashing a powerful shot. Unfortunately for Germany, Gokhan Gül inadvertently deflected the ball up and over the already committed Constantin Frommann and into the back of the net.

It went from bad to worse for the previously unbeatable Germany side, as they found themselves a further goal behind six minutes later. A wonderful corner from the right was met powerfully by Francisco Venegas at the near post, who had lost Saglam in the area. He wasn't going to let him off the hook, and he headed home to double the Mexicans lead.

All was not lost for the European side and they managed to grab an immediate response to put themselves back in the game. A corner was whipped in by Köhlert and not dealt with at all well by Mexico. After a few blocks and poorly struck shots, Eggestein eventually poked the ball into the back of the net to halve the deficit and score a third goal in a lively nine minute spell.

Germany had late chances and pressure to grab a second goal, but Joel Abu Hanna's header went over and Passlack's drive went narrowly wide of the far post. Gül narrowly shot wide also, though it was too little too late and Mexico advanced as group winners. The Germans will now face Croatia for a place in the last eight.
