It was a real tale of David and Goliath on Tuesday evening, which saw the much-fancied RB Leipzig soundly beaten by Unterhaching.

The now Regionalliga Bayern side were left decimated after relegation to Germany's fourth-tier last season, for which many of their players' contracts were not valid. The likes of Kenny Prince Redondo and Pascal Köpke left for the 2. Bundesliga, but the fighting spirit with those who did say was there for all to see.

An incredible start to the match

It was obvious to all in attendence that the home side were more enthusiastic than a Leipzig side who had only made it through to the second round after their game against VfL Osnabrück was abandoned. So, perhaps it was appropriate that the hero from their triumph over FC Ingolstadt 04Markus Einsiedler, opened the scoring. He collected Thomas Steinherr's pass before confidently and calmly slotting home.

Steinherr and Alexander Piller both had good opportunities to add to the scoreline in the aftermath, but were unable to convert.

The tempo was forcing Leipzig into repeated mistakes, and eventually Unterhaching made the most of one. Georg Teigl and Peter Gulacsi's miscommunication allowed Einsiedler to steal the ball and pass over to Marco Rosenzweig, who had an easy finish to double their lead.

'Haching hold on to reach the third round

Leipzig eventually fought their way back into the game, though a strong performance from Stefan Marinovic in the home goal kept Teigl, Nils Quaschner and Massimo Bruno at bay before the break.

The second half was rather drab, and Leipzig's attack attempts were few and far between despite dominating possession. There would be a third goal after Davie Selke twice went close, but it would be a third to cap off a fine night for the Bavarians. Steinherr converted for a deserved goal of his own, with Maximilian Nicu laying on the assist.
