The sun was out and it was a perfect day for football in Leipzig, it was also a day for a perfect away display from Kaiserslautern to end their losing streak.
Pre-match build-up
Last season this Sunday match between RB Leipzig and Kaiserslautern would've been a clash at top of the table, unfortunately that wasn't the case this term. RB Leipzig have started the campaign well and find themselves in second place, meanwhile Kaiserslautern are in 14th place and have lost their last three league matches.
Both teams were forced into making a number of changes thanks to suspensions and injuries, Leipzig were forced into three changes while Kaiserslautern had to make four. Despite having to make more changes the away side started quickly, unfortunately for their fans they failed to make any clear cut chances despite having more of the ball.
Müller on top form early on
It took a while for the home side to get going and it was Leipzig that provided the first real threat to a goal. Dominik Kaiser tried his luck from range, however Marius Müller was alert to flick the ball over.
Leipzig were very much on top and Kaiserslautern were happy to stay strong at the back and wait for their chances. With twenty-five minutes gone they got one of those chances, Kacper Przybyłko profited from a Marvin Compper mistake and after breaking into the area he curled his effort just wide of the post.
Leipzig had a good opportunity to take the lead but failed to make the most of it, Marcel Sabitzer and Davie Selke linked up brilliant and the chance fell to the latter who struggled to test Müller, the keeper made a comfortable save.
Kaiserslatern take a shock lead
Moments later the deadlock was broken nine minutes before the break and it was Kaiserslautern that took the lead. Ruben Jenssen managed to keep the ball in play on the left and he quickly slipped the ball down the line to Chris Löwe and the left back played in Mateusz Klich, who took his chance excellently and tucked the ball past Fabio Coltorti into the bottom right corner.
Leipzig came out fighting in the second half and they came close to equalising five minutes into the half. From just inside the area Sabitzer fired a good shot across goal and Müller could only palm the shot to the right, Emil Forsberg was onto the rebound but his follow up was well blocked.
The game started to settle down and it took till after the hour mark for the next meaningful chance to arrive, Selke managed to get the better of Stipe Vucur, but once more not Müller, the keeper was having a great game and he denied Leipzig again by palming the ball out for a corner.
Deville doubles the lead
Twenty minutes from time Kaiserslautern doubled their lead to seal a perfect away victory. Only four minutes after coming onto the pitch Maurice Deville put the ball into the back of the net, Lukas Görtler played him through and at the first time of asking Deville fired the ball under Coltorti.
Leipzig pushed for a way back into the game, however they had one issue and that was Müller being in the Kaiserslautern goal, the keeper once more denied Sabitzer who shot from range and Müller flicked the ball around the post.
That was the last of the action as Leipzig struggled to pick out team mates in the area and Kaiserslautern remained unbreakable at the back. A solid team performance from the away side earned them the three points and takes them up to eleventh. Leipzig dropped to second before the game as Freiburg drew and that defeat means they stay second on goal difference.
Up next for Leipzig they face Arminia Bielefeld and they'll hope to take a win home with them and regain top spot. For Kaiserslautern they'll look to build on this victory and start a winning run, next week they come up against FSV Frankfurt.
