Two teams with uncertain futures met at the WWK Arena as FC Augsburg hosted Werder Bremen on Sunday afternoon.

Home side Augsburg sat at the foot of the table before kick off, with just six points through 11 games and only a solitary win to their name.

A -11 goal difference was also proving problematic for Markus Weinzierl's side, who had actually won three of their last five competitive fixtures heading into the game.

Bremen meanwhile were slumping in form coming into the game and sat just above the bottom three with 10 points.

Under Viktor Skripnik they had lost four out of five in the league, the most recent success a 3-1 win at Mainz.

Cagey opening

The game was expectedly scrappy from the off as Kohr received an early caution for a poor challenge on Öztunali.

Zlatko Junuzovic had a shot from the left of the area deflected for a corner in the 4th minute, while Bobadilla failed to trouble Wiedwald with a spin-and-shot a minute later.

Santiago Garcia recieved a caution in the 11th minute for a reckless challenge from behind on Bobadilla, summarising the aggressive early exchanges between these strugglers.

Bremen almost took a lead in the 13th minute as Fin Bartels was met by a Levin Öztunali cross from the left. Bartels lifted the ball over Hitz at the near post, however it struck the upright and Junuzovic couldn't follow up.

There was not another chance until the half hour mark, when Öztunali led a swift counter for Werder, ending with him cutting inside from the right and firing just wide of the left post.

Garcia headed straight at Hitz inside the penalty area in what was to be a brief moment of panic inside the box.

Caiuby was the main threat for Augsburg going forward; having shots in the 37th, 38th and 40th minute in what was a much better end to the half from the Fuggerstädter.

At half-time the score was deservedly 0-0, with chances few and far between due to the apparent nerves of both teams.

Claudio Pizarro came on for Anthony Ujah at half-time, who was struggling with bruised ribs.

Visitors start rolling

Werder certainly looked to be carrying a more potent attacking threat, and had an opportunity in the 52nd minute after a wonderful interchange between Selassie and Junuzovic. The full-back laid off to the midfielder, but his shot was blocked well.

Bremen made their early work in the second half pay as Claudio Pizarro opened the scoring just before the hour. A counter-attack started when Bobadilla misplaced a pass that was picked up by Garcia and he found Pizarro, who made no mistake with a calm finish, his first goal since his return to Werder.

It was 2-0 just ten minutes later as Fin Bartels notched a goal. Junuzovic found Bartels following a throw-in, and he took it past Klavan, hitting a powerful shot into the top left corner that Hitz could only get fingertips to.

Response needed

Things were looking ominous for the hosts now, and the visitors were making full use of another lacklustre performance from their opponents.

Weinzierl tried to force the game, using all three substitutes with 15 minutes left in the game.

There was a flurry of late attempts for Augsburg as they desperately tried to claw back the situation. Callsen-Bracker and Bobadilla had shots in the 82nd and 84th minutes respectively; neither troubling the 'keeper.

In the 90th minute referee Stieler decided to award FC Augsburg a penalty for a foul by Garcia on Esswein despite a long discussion.

Paul Verhaegh, top scorer for the club, converted the penalty to give the home side very late life.

Werder Bremen held on to move up to 14th in the table with their fourth win of the season, while Augsburg stay rooted to the bottom.
