CSKA Moscow were bang out of luck on home soil on Wednesday as they fell to a 2-0 defeat against VfL Wolfsburg, one which sent them crashing out of the Champions League.

After a fairly dull first half, the Russians looked the more likely to break the deadlock when Zoran Tosic struck the post at the end a terrific move, but instead the Wolves got their noses in front less than five minutes later.

Substitute André Schürrle was forced wide as he raced through on the counter, wide enough for his effort to be straying wide, but Igor Akinfeev still attempted to save the fizzing shot and was made to pay for his misjudgment when it ricocheted off him and into the back of the net.

The former Chelsea man then doubled his team's tally late in the game, combining with another substitute in Sebastian Jung to wrap up the points with less than three minutes to go and eliminate CSKA.

Wolfsburg dominate tight opening half

Though Wolfsburg travelled to Khimki as the favourites, Russia is a country that teams struggle to record points in in European competition, and the opening half showed exactly why as CSKA were defensively disciplined and dangerous on the break.

There were few openings in the early stages, and the hosts themselves could have taken the lead instead against the run of play when Seydou Doumbia looked to capitalise on some miscommunication at the back by the Germans, but defender Naldo was able to sweep up.

Ahmed Musa had the Russians' best chance when he hit the sidenetting with a good strike in the area, but it was Wolfsburg who saw more of the ball and, thus, created the better opportunities.

The best of the half came with just under 10 minutes to play, Bas Dost teeing up strike partner Max Kruse with a cute touch inside the area before moving to create space for him to shoot, but the German international's powerful effort was straight at Akinfeev.

However, it was no surprise that the scores remained goalless at the break, with Wolfsburg struggling to breakdown a compact CSKA but able to deal with their counter-attacking threat.

CSKA improve, but fall behind against the run of play

CSKA were far more positive after the interval and Diego Benaglio was forced into his first save of the game early on when Georgi Milanov fired low at goal after the 'keeper punched a free-kick high into the air.

They came within inches of breaking the deadlock just past the hour too, a lovely move resulting in Tosic striking the top of the post with a bending effort, Benaglio rooted to the spot as the woodwork came to his and Wolfsburg's rescue.

However, against the run of play, the visitors took the lead less than five minutes later through Schürrle, the substitute's effort from a tight angle deflecting in off the body of Akinfeev. The shot seemed to be fizzing wide, but the error-prone 'keeper dived to save it and instead saw it ricochet off him and into the back of the net.

Just as easily, the Wolves could have conceded an unfortunate own goal moments later, Maximilian Arnold in the wrong place at the wrong time as Musa's cross hit him and deflected goalwards, but Benaglio was occupying a good position to collect the ball instead as the visitors continued to have luck on their side.

Wolves wrap it up late on

In need of a result to keep their European campaign alive, CSKA pushed with all their might to get back into the game, with Musa breaking through on goal in the final few minutes, but Naldo was there to make a superb last ditch tackle just as he was about to pull the trigger.

Pushing forward for an equaliser, the hosts were exposed at the back though and Schürrle, who was excellent off the bench, ensured his name would be on the scoresheet with two minutes remaining as he fired home Sebastian Jung's cut-back to seal victory.

Another player introduced off the bench, Nicklas Bendtner hit the outside of the post with a bending effort in stoppage time, but the two goals were enough for his side in the end as their defence stood firm with a number of late blocks and important interventions.

CSKA, on the other hand, crash out of the competition at the group stages for the third season running after another disappointing campaign.
