The last action of the weekend saw Dortmund host Eintracht Frankfurt as they looked to increase the gap from third and close the gap to Bayern Munich. The hosts duly obliged, with a stellar second-half display putting the Eagles to the sword.
Frankfurt shock the Westfalenstadion
Dortmund started the game in fantastic fashion and Frankfurt were struggling to deal with their hosts and their attacking power. In the first minute Gonzalo Castro slipped the ball through to Marco Reus, however on his first start for Frankfurt young defender David Kinsombi showed great recovery speed to get back to slide in and knock the ball away from Reus.
Lukas Hradecky was the busiest of the two keepers and he was busy once more when Ilkay Gündogan shot from just inside the area and the keeper managed to match the effort.
Despite the early pressure Dortmund found themselves over committing going forward and they were punished for it. Hradecky easily saved an effort from Reus and quickly produced an excellent pass up field to the free Haris Seferović, the Swiss forward brilliantly charged towards goal and held up the ball for support. Seferović's pass to Slobodan Medojević saw him dummy the ball for Alexander Meier and the forward made no mistakes in firing his shot into the bottom left corner from range.
Hosts level after missed penalty
Frankfurt looked more settled in the game, however Dortmund always looked like scoring every time they came forward. The home side finally found an equaliser in the twenty-fourth minute, Mats Hummels played a lovely ball through to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who played the ball across goal for Henrikh Mkhitaryan to slide in and tap home.
Dortmund pushed for the lead but struggled to beat Hradecky, they did finally beat Hradecky, unfortunately the goal was correctly called offside. Hummels once more played a lovely pass through, this time to Reus who squared the ball to Aubameyang to finish, sadly Reus strayed offside.
Dortmund quickly had another chance to take the lead, this time from the penalty spot. Medojević fouled Castro inside the area and if the penalty was bad enough he picked up a second booking to reduce his team down to ten men. Luckily for the visitors Aubameyang stepped up only to fire the penalty wide to the right.
The last chance of the half fell to Dortmund and Mkhitaryan, a terrific cross from Marcel Schmelzer picked out the Armenian, who somehow put his effort over from a few yards out.
BVB turn the game on its head
Dortmund didn't waste much time in grabbing the lead in the second half, Gündogan played a wonderful through ball over the top to Shinji Kagawa, who then laid the ball onto a plate for Aubameyang to tap in.
Moments later Dortmund increased the lead and at first viewing it looked like Mkhitaryan and Hummels both scored with both striking the ball at the same time. However after Kagawa's pass and Mkhitaryan's touch they didn't strike the ball at the same time, Hummels struck the ball just before his team mate and the ball rifled past Hradecky.
Three minutes later Mkhitaryan couldn't convert from three yards out and denied his team of a tremendous team goal. Castro was played through and after his shot looped up off Hradecky he cleverly headed the ball across to Mkhitaryan who headed over the bar.
Dortmund cruise through the remainder of the game
The game slowed with Dortmund's comfortable lead, however it was almost 4-1 when Kagawa attempted an outrageous lob from out wide and he was close to pulling it off, unfortunately the shot didn't dip in team and landed on the roof of the net.
The last bit of action was Dortmund's fourth, Łukasz Piszczek whipped in a great cross to pick out Adrián Ramos who had only been on the pitch for a few minutes to volley past Hradecky and finish Dortmund's last home game of the year in style.
A tough evening for Eintracht Frankfurt who are in 15th place after the defeat, up next for them is the home match against Werder Bremen. As for Dortmund their last match before the winter break is away to Köln, before that though they have to play Augsburg in the DFB Pokal.
