Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been awarded with the biggest prize at the Confederation of African Football awards, winning African Player of the Year for 2015.

The Borussia Dortmund star beat the likes of Yaya Toure, Andre Ayew and Riyad Mahrez to the prestigious award, with the 26-year-old winning it for the first time in his career.

Aubameyang reached new levels in 2015

It follows a glittering 12 months for the Gabon international, who began settling in at his new club by the turn of the year, as they recovered from a tough start to the season under Jürgen Klopp to finish seventh in the Bundesliga.

However, it was under new manager Thomas Tuchel for whom the striker really shined, as he went into the Bundesliga winter break leading the goalscoring charts, having amassed 18 goals in 17 games over the first few months of the season.

No sixth in a row for Toure

Despite being amongst the clear favourites for the award, Aubameyang will have been delighted to see off Manchester City's Toure for the prize, given that the Ivorian has won it for five years in a row.

Despite being described as disappointed to not have made it six on the trot, Toure was said to congratulate the deserving Aubameyang, and he'll have also been glad that his national team coach, Herve Renard, picked up manager of the year at the awards.

The Frenchman led Ivory Coast to victory at the African Cup of Nations in February, becoming the first manager to win it with two different countries, having been victorious with Zambia in 2012.

Aubameyang, meanwhile, will look ahead to his return to Germany with the winter break coming to an end. He and his Dortmund teammates will shift their focus away from turkey, mistletoe and presents, to chasing down the eight point lead Bayern Munich hold at the top of the Bundesliga table.
