Peruvian International Carlos Ascues has damaged his meniscus and will be out for an unknown period of time. VfL Wolfsburg have released a statement on their official homepage and mentioned that the injury happened during the recent training camp in Portugal, where Ascues was working on his rehabilitation.

It looks like the 23-year-old defender has to undergo surgery which will put him out of action for several weeks. He recently recovered from on-going knee problems and it was rumoured that Ascues was set to join another team on loan to gain some more playing time. But a transfer during the winter break is unlikely now.

Ascues still hasn't found his place

Ascues is known as huge talent in his country and one of the best players in the Peruvian national team. The Peruvian International completed his move from FBC Melgar to the DFB Pokal winners of 2015 last June but has been unable to make an impact during his stay in Germany so far. The defender has not made an official appearance for the Wolves yet and only competed in a friendly versus 1. FC Magdeburg last year.

After the friendly, Head Coach Dieter Hecking said that Ascues is a very fast player who features a skillful game but his performances are still improvable. Unfortunately the defender has been followed by bad luck and had to deal with injuries every now and then, which prevented him from becoming an important part of Wolfsburg's game.

Bas Dost injured during training camp as well

Ascues' injury was not the only one that occurred during the training camp in Portugal, unfortunately. As reported a few days ago, Bas Dost suffered a broken foot in training after a rough tackle by teammate Dante. While the Wolves can most likely compensate the injury of defender Carlos Ascues, there's a possibility that they might sign a new striker.
