On the same day that Jan Mauersberger left the club, Karlsruher SC have announced that Dirk Orlishausen has extended his contract through to 2018.

The news follows on from René Vollath's extension earlier this week, with the younger of the two goalkeepers committing himself until 2018.

Orlishausen was the first-choice stopper during the first-half of the season, although Markus Kauczinski has left the goalkeeping question heading into this year.

An important part of the Wildparkstadion side

The 33-year-old has been the mainstay in the Karlsruhe team since he arrived from Rot-Weiß Erfurt in the summer of 2011.

144 appearances later, including 16 of the 19 2. Bundesliga games this term, have seen him become a fan favourite.

His wise head, commanding presence in the box and shot-stopping ability mean he is one of the league's best and most consistent custodians.

However, Karlsruhe and seemingly Kauczinski have realised that he will not be around forever and need to start planning for the future.

Vollath has had the chance to play under Orlishausen and the contract extension seems set to give the pair time to work together, getting the best out of both.

Todt and Orlishausen give their opinion

"Dirk is an absolute professional and is enjoying his fifth year with us here, both in sporting and in personal relationships he holds a very high reputation," said sporting director Jens Todt on the announcement. Speaking to the club website, he added: "We are even more pleased that the Wildpark is still his home."

Orlishausen himself gave his thoughts, "From the beginning it was my clear goal and my desire to extend here." He also said: "I feel comfortable here, I want to further myself and fully and jointly pursue our goals with the club"
