On Friday, Borussia Dortmund and SC Freiburg confirmed that Pascal Stenzel had moved on loan to the latter.

The 19-year-old has joined on a year-and-a-half long deal, which will see him remain with the Schwarzwald side until the end of the 2016/17 campaign.

A promising start to his career

Stenzel made his BVB debut this season in the 1-0 defeat to PAOK Saloniki in the final UEFA Euopa League group stage game.

He had been constantly involved in and around the first team squad this year, which will no doubt stand him in good stead at his new club.

The versatile defender has also been with the Germany under-20 side and will hope to rise through the national team ranks as well.

Freiburg could be the perfect place to develop

Given the record Freiburg have of developing talented youngsters into Bundesliga regulars, this may well be the perfect opportunity for him to follow suit.

Matthias Ginter and Roman Bürki, who are already with Dortmund, are two such examples.

Jonathan Schmid and Oliver Baumann are another duo, now both at Hoffenheim. Whether Stenzel will reach this level remains to be seen, but the potential is there.

Hartenbach and Stenzel give their thoughts on the move

Sporting director Klemens Hartenbach spoke to the club website about the deal, highlighting Stenzel's "game intelligence" as a younger player.

He continued, "In the under-20 national team and the squad of Borussia Dortmund he was able to perform at very high levels.

"Pascal can also be used as both a right-back and central midfield," concluded Hartenbach.

Stenzel himself also had his say, "The Freiburg gameplan suits me and it is the right club to earn playing time and develop myself."

The youngster added, "I have of course in Dortmund been with Matthias Ginter and Roman Bürki, who told me only good things about the Sport Club."
