FC Augsburg have completed the loan deal of Alfred Finnbogason, who joins the club until the end of the season from La Liga side Real Sociedad.

Meanwhile, going out the other door, Tim Matavz has joined Serie A outfit Genoa - also on a loan deal which will run until the end of the current season.

Augsburg will certainly hope that their new signing has better success in front of goal than the striker departing today too, Matavz having failed to find the back of the net in 11 Bundesliga games this season.

Finnbogason, who signs for Die Függerstädter on his 27th birthday, will hope so too, looking to rediscover the form that he hit in the Netherlands with sc Heerenveen that made him such a hot property in Europe.

Augsburg shake things up

As aforementioned, Matavz has had a torrid time in front of goal this season. The Slovenian came to Augsburg from PSV Eindhoven, where he managed 11 goals in both the 2011-12 and 2012-13 seasons, but he has failed to hit those heights since.

Last term, he managed three goals in 16 appearances, but he has failed to even score so far this campaign, and so his departure is hardly a shock.

However, the club have taken something of a risk in signing Finnbogason - albeit a calculated one with a loan deal. The Iceland international forward has struggled to find the form he produced with Heerenveen since departing, managing just two goals for Sociedad last season and one in seven games for Olympiakos on loan in the first half of this season.

There's no doubt over his ability though - his 29 goals in 32 games in 2013-14 and 24 in 33 in 2012-13 show that he knows where the back of the net is. It's now down to the Bundesliga outfit to get this form out of him.

Birthday boy celebrating

Speaking to Augsburg's official website, both the club and the player expressed their delight with the deal that sees Finnbogason make the move to Germany.

Sporting Director Stefan Reuter revealed that the club have in fact "followed" the player's "progress closely" over the years, and so they are "pleased" that he has finally "joined" them.

"He has many qualities," Reuter continued, "and will improve our squad."

Finnbogason himself, who will wear the number 27 shirt at the WWK Arena, described the move as a "dream," with him delighted to have been given "the opportunity to play in the Bundesliga."

He said that he is "incredibly excited" for the "challenge" that awaits him at Augsburg, and is keen to get going with the club, one who he believes came across as "the right [one] for [him]" during talks.
