Borussia Dortmund have extended the contract of Roman Weidenfeller, their second-choice goalkeeper, until 2017.

He has fallen down the pecking order after Roman Bürki arrived in the summer from SC Freiburg, but will continue to be an able back-up.

A show of confidence

After a poor season last year, were he had been replaced by Mitch Langerak due to his lacklustre performances, his chances of staying with BVB were low.

Everyone around the club thought that he was going to leave for another team because he could not match his previous levels of performance, especially when Dortmund won two Bundesliga titles.

But, despite those showings, his problems off the pitch with his behaviour, nothing happened and the departure of the legendary goalkeeper became less likely.

With the new coach, Thomas Tuchel, Weidenfeller has been playing each game in UEFA Europa League in a bid to keep a balance between himself and Bürki.

It meant that Tuchel and the club had restored his confidence again, even if he had a lower levels of responsibility.

Longevity

After almost 14 years with Dortmund, Weidenfeller is second behind only Michael Zorc in the list of the most-capped BVB players.

Moreover, the sporting director at the club, is pleased to have tied down the veteran stopper: "Roman, with his footballing and personal attributes, was and still is an important part of our squad and always displays high standards of professionalism."

Speaking to the club website, Zorc added: "We are very pleased that'll we'll be moving forward in the future together."

But he is not the only one to be happy with that, Weidenfeller declared: "The allegiance to the team, because of my longstanding affiliation with the club, was the decisive factor in my contract renewal. After 14 years I feel at home in Dortmund."

Therefore, the story between Borussia Dortmund and their most experienced active player is not over yet.
