Early on Friday morning, Bayer Leverkusen made the biggest move of the transfer window thus far.

The Werkself announced the arrival of Kevin Volland from TSG 1899 Hoffenheim, with the attacker signing a five-year deal at the BayArena.

There has been no official confirmation of the transfer fee, although transfermarkt report Leverkusen have paid €18m for his services; a club record.

Plenty of promise

Despite a fairly tough season with the Sinsheim side, where they left it very late to maintain their Bundesliga status, Volland has enjoyed another steady season.

10 assists and eight goals actually topples his total for last campaign where, arguably, there was more hype around a potential transfer to a bigger club.

It capped off a fourth successive year where Volland finished with 15 or more Bundesliga goals and assists, which is hugely impressive.

After beginning his professional career with 1860 Munich and two impressive goalscoring seasons in the youth academy, the now 23-year-old quickly shot into the first-team.

A steady campaign followed, but his second term in the 2. Bundesliga saw him net 13 times and set up a further 11 goals for his team-mates.

Volland, Schade and Völler describe the deal

Michael Schade, speaking after the news was announced, said: "We have had an interest in Kevin Volland for a long time, and now it's finally happened."

Schade, talking to the club website, praise Volland's versatility: "He is able to play in practically every attacking position."

"With his pace, strength and eye for goal, he will enhance our attack once more," added sporting director Rudi Völler.

He continued, "We are happy that - even with competition from a host of clubs - we were able to prevail and that Kevin has chosen us."

Volland then had his say, "I felt extremely comfortable in Kraichgau and, despite other opportunities in the last year, extended my contract again.

"But the chance to join a top club like Bayer Leverkusen and play Champions League football was one I had to take," he continued.

Volland was keen to emphasise this was a great opportunity, "Bayer 04 is the ideal team for me to continue my development and to present myself on an international stage."

The attacker concluded, "I am very excited to tackle Leverkusen's big goals."
