On Monday, 1. FSV Mainz 05 announced that SC Bastia had loaned in Pierre Bengtsson.

The Swedish left-back will make the temporary move to the French side for the remainder of the season, they confirmed.

Bengtsson will be familiar with at least one face in the squad, as he played against former Hannover 96 loanee, Allan Saint-Maximin last season.

A chance to get game time

With Daniel Brosinski seemingly shifted to the left to allow Giulio Donati into the right-back slot, the 28-year-old was set to be second choice.

Florian Marange providers his only opposition to starting in Corsica, and Bengtsson will be very confident of surpassing him in the pecking order.

Despite losing his starting spot, it is somewhat of a surprise to see someone who was a relative regular depart from the Opel Arena.

Since arriving in January 2015, Bengtsson has made 30 appearances for the Karnevalsverein in both the Bundesliga and DFB-Pokal.

His best times came while with FC Copenhagen, when he won the league twice and cup three times. Bengtsson has also claimed the Swedish league and cup.

Bengtsson becomes the seventh player to leave the club this summer, following on from the likes of Loris Karius and Julian Baumgartlinger.

Schröder has his say

Mainz's sporting director, Rouven Schröder gave his thoughts on the news when the deal was confirmed.

He said, "We would like to wish Pierre a successful time in Ligue 1 and hope he can make as many appearances as possible and gain some good match practice."

Schröder, who was speaking to the club website, concluded: "We were unfortunately not be able to guarantee him this sort of playing time at FSV this season."

Bengtsson, whose deal with Mainz runs until 2018, could make his debut for his new club against Toulouse FC on September 10th.
