After demotion to Serie B, Palermo president Maurizio Zamparini, has reportedly named Gennaro Gattuso as his first choice replacement for Giuseppe Sannino. In an interview with Radio 2, Zamparini stated, "he [Gattuso] could be our new manager, just as soon as I have resolved the situation here with Sannino. I think Sannino has already resigned, so we just have to reach an agreement". According to Tuttomercatoweb, the current Palermo manger, once his resignation is official, will take up the vacated managerial post at Chievo Verona.

Gattuso has previously stated an interest in the Palermo managerial job in La Gazzetta dello Sport, "I can't say anything right now," he said. "I'll meet with the president and then a decision will be made. Anyhow, I know that there is great enthusiasm in Palermo, and that is why I would like to join them."

The World Cup winner is reported to be currently negotiating his departure for FC Sion, whom he has both played for and managed over the past two years.
