Udinese captain Antonio Di Natale has announced he will retire from football at the end of the season.

The 36-year-old former Italy striker broke the news to Sky Italia in the wake of his side's defeat to Verona on Monday.

He said: "At the end of the season, I will stop. I have already spoken about it with my family. I’ve decided this is my last campaign. It all ends in June.

"It does hurt, because I’ve scored more goals for Udinese than I’ve gone out for dinner with my wife. I care about Udinese, as this club is like my family."

The man from Naples began his career at Empoli, where he made his debut in 1996. After scoring 49 goals in 158 games for the Tuscan side, he moved to Udinese in 2004. To date, the prolific striker has scored 189 goals in 362 appearances, and was made club captain in 2008.

Di Natale made his debut for Italy in 2002 in a friendly victory over Turkey; however, his first goal did not arrive until 2004, when he netted against the Czech Republic. He went on to be included in the squads for Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and Euro 2012, winning 49 caps for his country and scoring 11 goals.

He also won plaudits off the pitch; following the death of Udinese player Piermario Morosini while on loan at Livorno in 2012, Di Natale took responsibility for his team-mate's disabled sister, who was left with no surviving family.
