Serie A side Roma are ready to make Tottenham's Romanian centre-back Vlad Chiriches their number one transfer target, if Moroccan defender Mehdi Benatia ends up leaving the club this summer. Benatia was one of Roma's top performers last season, and was a rock in defence as the club managed to finish 2nd place and qualify for UEFA Champions League football again.

It would be a shame if he left the club, after a great season - but they have identified Chiriches as their target if he were to leave and join another club, with Chelsea among those reportedly set to make a transfer offer of up to £30million pounds for the defender, who joined in 2013.

Chiriches was one of the signings that Spurs made this time last year, as they spent £100million pounds on new players to try and re-build the squad after their talisman Gareth Bale sealed an £85.3million pound move to sign for Real Madrid on transfer deadline day.

Despite being a centre-back with quality, Chiriches struggled to hold down a first-team spot in the Tottenham side and he only made 20 appearances throughout the season. Roma will be happy to sign him as Benatia's replacement, if he does decide to leave the club - but Spurs will want to make money back on the Romanian, who still has time to develop at 24.
