Strootman has played down interest from Manchester United and former national coach Louis van Gaal.

The 24-year-old Dutch midfielder has been linked with a move to Manchester United on numerous occasions over the past two years, but he has played down any transfer speculation in regards to a deal to the Premier League - instead publicly stating to the Italian media that he would like to focus on improving and getting back to 100% fitness, back to his best form following his recovery from a serious knee injury which ruled him out of the 2014 World Cup from January of last year.

It is believed that Strootman is fully prepared to stand by the club, after they helped him with his recovery from injury in 2014 and wants to repay them for that, as well as improving as a player. He joined the Italian side back in July of 2013, for a transfer fee of £15.6million pounds from Eredivisie giants PSV Eindhoven.

He had this to say, to Sky Italia: "I've signed up for five years, but so far I've only been playing for six or seven months. I want to play and help the team; that's important to me. If I spoke about other clubs that would be disrespectful, and I don't want to do that.

I worked for eight months to come back - I played against Sassuolo and I wasn't good, then I came on against CSKA Moscow and wasn't right. After the winter break, I've been training with more confidence, I feel better physically and I'm returning to 100 per cent. I'm not there yet, but I'm coming back."

As the rumours began again in December, Roma's general manager Mauro Baldissoni said the following, to Sky Sports News: "Strootman is a young player and we have a very long contract so we want to build our team around him.
