Genoa confirmed on Wednesday evening that they have withdrawn their final appeal to the Italian authorities and will therefore not participate in the 2015/16 Europa League.

Genoa's lawyer, Mattia Grassani, confirmed in a statement; "Out of a sense of responsibility and respect towards the institutions, considering the insistence of the FIGC and very rigorous rules surrounding the UEFA licence, we withdrew our appeal."

In a further blow to the Rossablu the final Europa League spot awarded to Serie A will now go to Genoa's city rivals, Sampdoria.

Genoa failed to nominate a replacement stadium for next year's Europa League as the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, that they ironically share with Sampdoria, undergoes renovation. Fortunately for Sampdoria they nominated Sassuolo's Mapei Stadium which is over 230 km away and they can now take their rivals place despite finishing a place below them in the standings.

It wasn't all doom and gloom for the Grifone on Wednesday as the club announced that they extended the contract of Italy international, Mattia Perin until the summer of 2019  but European football would have been a huge boost to the club and it would no doubt have helped Gian Piero Gasperini as he looks to build his squad for next season.
