Claudio Ranieri is in Cagliari ahead of a meeting with club officials to discuss a return to the Sardinian club according to Di Marzio.

Cagliari were relegated to Serie B last season and they finished the season with former player, Gianluca Festa in charge. Festa said at the end of the season that he would like to stay but conceded that he did not know what the future held.

It seems that the club would prefer a more experienced name and they have approached Ranieri, 24 years after he first left the club. The Italian managed the club for three years between 1988 and 1991, taking them to Serie A with two successive promotions from Serie C1.

Ranieri has managed 11 clubs in four countries, with mixed levels of success, since his last spell in Sardinia. His last job was in international football when he had a short, disappointing spell with Greece that saw them lose a home Euro 2016 qualifier to the Faroe Islands which led to his dismissal.

One thing Ranieri has shown throughout his career is that he can get teams promoted with the Italian also taking Palermo, Fiorentina and Monaco to league titles outside the top levels in their respective countries and Cagliari will be desperate to see him come back to the Stadio Sant'Elia to take the club back into Italy's top flight.
